Peter & Linda Lord invite you to be their guests at Bobcat Cottage. Bobcat's comfort and surroundings are some of the best the "Quiet-Side" has to offer, whether preparing to explore the trails surrounding the meadow, or returning from a star filled evening at the observatory.

Bobcat is a "lite" housekeeping cottage nestled in the woods near the observatory and the undeveloped side of  Acadia National Park. Just a short walk brings you to the main house and into the meadow next to the observatory. The observatory is located on an out- cropping overlooking the meadow and the surrounding forests.

The "Quiet Side" of Mount Desert Island is blessed with some of the darkest skies on the east coast. The observatory sits atop a granite knoll at the meadow's edge that falls away toward Acadia National Park in a series of mossy ledges to the beginning of Halfway Brook.

Your stay of a week or more comes  with a private daytime lesson on the use of a 4-1/2" Orion StarBlast, yours to use at the observing area next to the dome. (Use of the 5" refractor and the dome is NOT included.)

"The cottage was perfect! Walking over to the observatory with its pink lights glowing was surreal."  Catherine Bernard

This is a lovely, quite time to be here in this amazing place. The people of MDI are among the friendliest people anywhere. So open and eager! We have felt so welcome here. It's been a wonderful, peaceful respite from the stress and grind of our daily lives... Fare thee well Peter and Linda ...

"Thanks for sharing this fine gift that is Bobcat Cottage.

We loved it here! You have thought of every "luxury" for this lovely cabin - more like a real "home away from home". We could not have been happier with the accommodations.

This is a wondrous place and we are very grateful for getting to experience it.. We hope someday to return to the magic of Acadia.

Thank You! Our stay was superb thanks to you both - of course the stars being the most extraordinary treat of the week. We will spread the word!

You have created a wonderful environment for our family to use as our home away from home on MDI. Ethan loved his time in "the secret laboratory" (a.k.a the loft) and we loved the amenities.

The Milky Way and all the wonders of the night sky, Peter was able to introduce us to will last with us for a life time

Thank you for such a delightful cottage! The "homey" touches were so appreciated. The soft bedding, flower box, and awesomely supplied kitchen made us feel so very welcomed. Thanks for allowing John full reign in your forest and meadow...it's a little boy's dream. The tour of the sky was wonderful. We learned more in one evening than ever before. We wont ever see the heavens quite the same.

There are no words to express the beauty of MDI. We loved every moment!

Thanks for your hospitality!

Thanks again for knowing what makes a great "guest house". We had everything we needed to make our stay easy and comfortable. Our high points were

Our trip with "Island Cruses" out of Bass Harbor where we spent 2 hrs looking at harbor and gray seals, bald eagles and all kinds of birds and ocean wildlife.

    A lobster dinner at Thurston's

Hiking up the Beehive- Not for the faint of heart.

Biking on the carriage roads with the obligatory stop at the Jordon Pond House for Popovers

What an Awesome week! Thank you Peter and Linda for creating a beautiful home away from home. The cabin is so comfortable and cozy! Thurston's for Lobster...3 times in one week! Yikes! I think we have a lobster problem in this family.....Delicious every time!

We really loved Bobcat Cottage. A wonderful home away from home - very comfortable and well equipped. We enjoyed the book of hikes and the comments on the trails (left by our previous guests)

This was the perfect combination of relaxation and exhilaration for our romantic getaway. We enjoyed quiet nights at the cottage, star gazing, walks in the woods & along the sea, dinners out, and shopping. Peter and Linda you were wonderful hosts.

Thanks for the dark skies! It's great to look up at a sky with a million blazing stars and a northern Milky Way brighter than I thought possible. An unforgettable Experience.

Mike

I want to thank both of you for an astronomy vacation that was beyond my expectations. I have been viewing for years and this was the first time I was reluctant to use the telescope. I just wanted to enjoy the spectacular views of the Milky Way.

This vacation was our family’s first trip to Maine. We didn’t know much about the area or what part of the Island might make a good “base”. After spending our week at Bobcat Cottage, we don’t think we could have picked a better place. It was perfect for a family – small enough to be cozy but large enough to give our boys some space. Peter and Linda thought of everything-this cottage is better equipped than many homes, especially in the kitchen! The games are also a nice addition, a refreshing change from computer games.

Our favorite things were kayaking in Seal Cove, visiting the Bass Harbor Head Light early in the morning, helping to hoist the sails on the schooner Margaret Todd, & eating a wonderful meal at the Seafood Ketch. We enjoyed lots of hiking, popovers at the Jordon Pond House and seeing the antique cars at Seal Cove Auto Museum - what an awesome collection! And we took a horse drawn carriage to the top of Day Mountain a great experience to take one back in time- and lobster at Thurston’s - so many good things to make this a memorable trip.

This was our first family trip to Maine. We couldn’t have picked a better place to stay than Bobcat Cottage. Staying on the quiet side of the island was simply wonderful. Linda and Peter were terrific hosts and supplied the cottage with more than we could have expected, they thought of everything!! Emily especially enjoyed spending time with Peter and the stars. I think we can now add Astronomer to her ever growing list of “What I want to be when I grow up.” She will never forget this experience.

What more can we say about Bar Harbor than breathtaking. Every experience was exhilarating-every hike-every canoe trip, every sunrise, sunset. I could go on, and on…. Being here, especially on the “quiet side” makes you realize how precious time is. How it should be enjoyed by more simple things.

We really loved JR’s visits, it made us a little less homesick for our two guys!

Again thank you Linda and Peter, may you be blessed with good fortune in your new adventure here. You already have the hospitality down to a science. I’m sure we’ll get to know each other more in the coming years!

With many blessed wishes,
Zion, Wendy, & Emily, Harstine

Dear Peter and Linda + JR
I just wanted to say thank you for teaching me Astronomy. I really liked it. Thanks for letting me borrow the telescope. It was really fun when we looked at the slides and when we looked at the stars. JR was the best part!! The cottage was really fun too!

We enjoyed Bobcat Cottage and our stay (the second one) on the "quiet-side". Peter and Linda were wonderful hosts and the cottage was wonderful in every way. The fireplace takes the edge off of cold evenings and we loved the games! There is so much to do here- We can't wait to come back! (Mom)

We loved every moment in Bobcat Cottage. The beds were very comfortable too. We liked having our own telescope and learning about the Solar System. Peter and Linda were great hosts. They were very nice, and so was J. R.. We all had a great time! We can't wait to come again!! :) (Halley)

This has been a great family vacation for us. The cottage was perfect! Walking over to the observatory with its pink lights glowing was surreal. We were so lucky to have totally clear sky full of stars. Peter was very patient leading us through them. The charm of Bernard and SW Harbor is now a memory Claire, Julia, and Alex (our children) will have and can share with us. We explored towns, took the vagabond trip (great!) getting to see seals, eagles fish, and catch lobster and then eat! them on Beal's pier - recommend this highly. Kayaking and swimming in Long Pond, Hiking the Beach Cliff Trail and swimming in Echo Lake, hiking above Valley Cove and eating blueberries, eating fish, lobster, and ice cream everywhere, were great shared family fun: We can hardly wait to return to this wonderful vacation island.

What a great place! I loved visiting the town of Bernard and learning about the spectacular Maine sky.

We are fortunate to be the "first" family to enjoy Bobcat Cottage. Midway through this life, we found ourselves in a dark wood.... etc. (Peter knows the rest) actually we found ourselves in a lovely cottage on the quiet-side - After many visits to MDI at different points in our lives we learned.....
     1. Where the North Star is.
     2. Precipice is a trail, not a mountain!
     3. Beehive is a trail not a mountain!!
     4. Vega in the brightest star in the summer sky.

We learned Peter and Linda are more than gracious hosts who respond to every need in record time.  We wish them well in their new adventure.  Long Summer days offered opportunities for long summer hikes, and even rainy days offered the chance to catch up on sleep and reading. We go back to the "modern life" refreshed and reinvigorated.
